The world is evolving, yet we are stuck not because our feet are glued to the surface of the earth, rather to the failure of transforming education. Education lightens up the darkness of ignorance and forms the basis for how much we see life to what work we can perform. Today, we are pulled back by numerous ills of lack of quality education, one of which is gender inequality.
Gender inequality for education emanates from the stereotypes from different cultures and religions due to the mentality of the false ideal way to life; thereby giving responsibilities and supposed behavior to a particular gender. The expansion of the Gender gap increases when we fail to debunk the idea that girls are better at cooking not STEM fields or that boys will make a better judge because they are not overly emotional like the girls.
Growing up, we had access to quality education, but this did not make us oblivious to the worries of girls whose life felt otherwise. The brokenness of girls who want to be seen, heard and known but not defined by their gender triggered the birth of our Girls Community for Change (GCC) project. This project has given us the opportunity to hear from and connect you to the heart of a Nigerian girl from Kaduna, Clementina who feels the emptiness of girls who do not have access to education.
Clementina shared an insight to a typical girl’s life in Kaduna, where she indicated that the major obstacles affecting girls’ inaccessibility to education are insecurity and poverty. Moreover, girls have reported that the educational system globally does not promote Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) as well as the urgency needed in achieving the global goals for a better world. Hence, we launched a magazine titled "GEM" which highlights solutions to issues affecting humanity and our planet . Our magazine also features the great works and life stories of female celebrity activists and trailblazers that promote SEL in schools.
We call upon all world leaders to pass on our Petition into law to promote gender transformative education. #ActForEqual #Letmelearn #TransformingEducation #GenerationEquality
